Hillary Clinton says Donald Trump is ‘obsessed’ with her because she ‘got more votes’

Over a year after Donald Trump shocked the world with his surprise electoral victory over Hillary Clinton, his former Democratic foe has a simple explanation for why the President won’t stop talking about her: She got more votes than him.

Ms Clinton, who won the popular vote but lost in the electoral college, said that Mr Trump is “obsessed” with he during an interview on the Washington Post podcast “Listen Up”.

“Well, he’s a little obsessed with me, but I think it’s partly his own ego because he knows I got more votes and he knows that there are questions about the election that deserve answers,” Ms Clinton said. “And he knows I’m still speaking out, I haven’t retreated under a rock somewhere.”

Ms Clinton said that she also thinks Mr Trump still attacks her because she’s a familiar target, and one that his base easily recognizes.

“It’s also part of his political strategy. It is something that he knows his hard-core supporters will respond to, and he’s trying to keep them on board,” Ms Clinton continued. ”When in trouble in the Congress or the Russian investigation, his go-to targets are President Obama and me, and African Americans. It just is part of how he responds.”

The former secretary of State, who is on a multi-state tour to sell her new book analysing what happened during the 2016 election has spoken out against Mr Trump since his election, providing criticism on issues she cares about.

Ms Clinton won the popular vote in the United States by 2.9 million votes — the largest popular vote win margin by a losing candidate in history. Mr Trump was able to win the electoral college, however, by taking several states thought to be reliably Democratic but were swayed by Mr Trump’s populist rhetoric.
