The contents of Barack Obama’s private letter to Donald Trump on Inauguration Day have been revealed after he reportedly showed it to Oval Office visitors.
Mr Obama congratulated his successor on “a remarkable run” and told him that the two of them had been “blessed in different ways, with great good fortune”.
In the 275-word letter, obtained by the network, Mr Obama also urged Mr Trump to “sustain the international order that has expanded steadily since the end of the Cold War.”
Mr Obama is quoted as saying: “Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.
“This is a unique office, without a clear blueprint for success, so I don’t know that any advice from me will be particularly helpful. Still, let me offer a few reflections from the past 8 years.”
The letter then offers four “reflections” touching on American leadership in the world, democracy and spending time with loved ones.
Mr Trump is urged to “build ladders of success for every child and family” and protect the “instruments of democracy”.
